Philip Laing: is it his fault?
Everybody has woken up the morning after the night before and had the “Oh no, what did I do?” feeling but perhaps no-one has ever suffered the consequences more than Sheffield Hallam student Philip Laing.
Laing, 19, who is originally from Macclesfield went on the organised bar crawl Carnage back in October. He drank so much that he passed out in a door way and hit his head. He was helped to his feet and proceeded to stumble over to the war memorial in Barkers Pool. He urinated over the poppy wreaths there before stumbling off. He has no recollection of any of these events.
The public outcry has been witnessed nationwide, with the picture of Laing making national newspapers. He has since been sentenced to 250 hours community service and ordered to pay £185 in costs.

To give him credit he has always appeared 100% remorseful about his actions on this night, but how much of this was his fault and how much was to blame on the student culture?
When most people become students it is the first time they have lived away from home and had unlimited freedom and this, coupled with the stereotype that students are meant to drink excessively most week nights leads to a lot of students going mad when they first get to university.

Philip Laing, although he probably enjoyed drinking this much, most likely felt that it was part of being a student to go and get so drunk you cannot remember anything. There was also no doubt numerous people who were as drunk as him on this night but who urinated somewhere else in the city.
I don’t think it is his fault as an individual for urinating on the monument but it was his fault for drinking that much alcohol in the first place. Perhaps we need to tackle why he felt the need to drink this much in the first place rather than punishing him for something he doesn’t even remember.

Philip now faces disciplinary proceedings at Sheffield Hallam University. They issued this statement: “The university has already initiated disciplinary proceedings against this student. Now that the judicial process has been completed we will arrange a disciplinary hearing to decide appropriate sanctions.” Once again is seems that this 19 year old man is acting as a scapegoat for the student populations drinking problem.
